I love decorating for the holidays and Halloween is one of my favorites! This year my girls and I decided to make a candy bar that we could enjoy for the entire month. This was so much fun putting together with them, and I really love how it turned out.

From Shabby Drab to Frenchy Fab!

I have been wanting to give my photography room a makeover for some time now and decided this past week to get to work on it. I love the outcome! I took it from Shabby Drab to French Fab! Originally it was pink and white shabby chic in style. While this worked for me 6 years ago it became outdated and I didn't enjoy the feeling of the room.

I am so pleased with the colors I chose and the way this room transformed into an opulent suite! Everything about it feels so warm and inviting. I was able to incorporate many of my basic items such as the original dresser, bed, and tables into this room simply by giving them a touch of paint, or redecorating them to fit in with the flow of the room. My dresser was original chippy white. I gave it a new coat of paint and glaze, added old mix matched hardware and waaa laaa! I'm in love with it!

The walls I applied 3 different earth tones colors of paint and slip slapped them mixing in pages from old books I love. The outcome was simply stunning!

My Anthropologie...Oh how I love thee! Your magazine and stores inspire my creativity and talents so... I find great happiness and joy when your catalog arrives in my mailbox. I secretly find myself setting aside time to soak in the bath while scouring the pages of your book for treasures and inspiration. The above mosaic is my personal photography collage "Ode de Anthropologie"... The chandelier was created with this and thats-antique crystals, old perfume bottles, early 1900s skeleton keys, mens eyewear, old clock faces, along with an old souvenir eiffel tower and bits n pieces of treasures from the past.

The past six months have been really tough for me and it seems like in times like these friends matter most. I took these pictures of my daughter Aysha and her friend the past weekend. I love the emotion I was able to capture between these two girls. A best friend is someone you can tell all your secrets to, and someone that is there to listen to you in both the good times and the hard. My best friend can bring me up when I am down and she even makes me believe my butt is not as big as it really is! She is the light at the end of the tunnel some days, and always good for a great laugh. She never makes me feel bad about my decisions, even if they don't make much sense, some how she can always point out the good in all situations. She believes in me and inspires me to be a better person. This post is dedicated to Kathy... Thank you for always being the best friend a girl could ever ask for! For easter this year my daughter Aysha and I decided to color coffee filters instead of eggs. I was cleaning out my cupboards and decided instead of trashing the old filters that no longer fit our coffee pot we would come up with a creative idea for them. First we tie-died the filters with food coloring and then let them dry over night. While slightly damp we twisted each filter into a beautiful flower shape. After twisting over 800 filters and filling my bed up with beautiful pastel roses our mission was not complete! Aysha decided to go find some sticks and create these gorgeous long stem paper roses for her grandmothers easter present. I took several and created garlands and the most gorgeous easter bonnet and bloomers a girl has ever seen! I hope you have fun looking at our easter creations this year! xo, Alys

Around My Town Part 1

With the winter season quickly approaching I thought it would be fun to head out with a dear friend and capture the city in photos before Jack Frost sprinkled his magic wand and covered it in a blanket of white wonderland. I always get so excited to get out into the big city around this time of year. The air has a different smell about it as the hustle and bustle of the holiday season approaches. I live about 30 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City and always find it a pleasure to drive into the city. Whether it be escaping to my favorite hotel "Hotel Monaco" for the evening or just meeting friends for lunch it is always pleasurable and such a treat. I took my camera along for 2 days of shopping, exploring and taking in this beautiful city. I will be posting part two "Holiday Store Windows" in a few days.
I have always loved architecture and have a sweet spot in my heart for the designs of times past. The craftsmanship and attention to fine detail captures my soul. I have taken photos of just a few of the historical buildings and landmarks you will see when visiting Salt Lake City. There is so much to see and do here, come for a visit sometime soon... xo, Alys

This past week our family has been celebrating "Birthdays" Aysha turned ten on Saturday. I cant believe she is a decade old. It seems like just yesterday I was holding her in my arms for the first time. We had a birthday party at the pizza parlor for her and then took all 13 girls to see the new movie Disney's A Christmas Carol. It was a blast! She had so much fun hanging out with all of her friends celebrating her special day.

Sunday came as a surprise, Baby Jasmine was born 4 weeks early. She is the most perfect baby ever! So precious and divine. It was so amazing to be able to witness her birth first hand and share in this miracle and experience. Life doesn't get much better than this! To all of you November birthdays out there... A few nights ago I had a dear friend over for dinner & desert. I set the table using random items I have been collecting for a while and just love the way it all came together. I normally don't decorate with the color blue, however I just fell in love with these plates and had to see if I could mix them in for the evening. What a fun night full of good food, laughter, fun and friendship. Now to take it down and set my fall table... the warm colors of autumn are my favorite!

Memories & Madness

Memories and Madness sums up this past week perfectly for me. My daughter Aspen had her first day of Junior High. She is in 7th grade and as I walked through the school doors I felt as if I should have been the one registering for class not my daughter! I can't believe how the time has passed so quickly. It seems like just yesterday I was sitting in History class writing letters to my boyfriend. "No Aspen..this is not appropriate 7th grade behavior... your mother was not a good example and don't follow in her footsteps... boys are bad, they have cooties, stay far far away from them!" With so much homework, projects and after school activities already this year I can tell it is going to be full of nothing but Memories and Madness!

Aysha also started 4th grade this year. What in the world has happened to my baby?! Thank goodness she still lets me hold her, love her and kiss her as much as I could ever want to. How in the world could I ever resist those dimples! She was so excited to get back to school and see all of her friends. Aysha is a social butterfly, she loves people and is very fun, caring and sincere.

My week was one of the very best of my entire life! Monday was alfresco dining with great weather, pizza, laughter, love and fabulous company...Tuesday was spent rockin out to my favorite band Depeche Mode at there Live Nation concert with my best friend... No, I can't dance or sing for that matter but I sure felt like a rockstar! Wednesday was Aysha's first soccer game of the season, She played defender and did great! Thursday retreating up at the fabulous new Dakota mountain lodge in Park City, relaxing for the evening and having the time of my life. What an amazing beautiful experience. Saturday was spent rocking out concert style again to an oldy but goodie Blondie. Incredible memories and good times spent with dear friends and treasured loved ones... I couldn't ask for a better week!

Picture was taken on my camera phone, sorry for the poor quality! But you can just tell I am having the time of my life, and blissfully happy! I hope your week has been filled with good times and fun memories to last a lifetime! We should all celebrate and cherish those that know us best and love us most. Chandeliers ~My Love

I have a passion/obsession for fabulous vintage lighting. Chandeliers are my favorite and I have one "OK maybe more than one" hanging in every room of my home. I love the eye candy they bring to a room and I never tire of looking at them. Placing a chandelier as the center crown of your room and building your decor around it adds such opulence and grandeur to any space. I adore flanking petite chandeliers on each side of my bedstead or hanging them in the powder room to add that extra touch of femininity. Another great way to use vintage chandeliers that may not be safe to use indoors is using them outside. I have an old wrought iron chandy hanging in my gazebo and another hanging under my deck. If you find an old chandelier and the color just doesn't work for your home, it is easy enough to grab a can of high lacquer spray paint and painting it the color of your choice. Holly Holly HollyHock

My dear friend Holly was diagnosed with Lupus 24 years ago. In 2008 she was hit very hard by this chronic, autoimmune disease. She was hospitalized for 3 months and it was very touch and go. The picture of Holly below was taken right after a surgery. Holly is a fighter and did not give up her battle with Lupus. I took the above photo of Holly today in her garden of vegetables & hollyhocks. All though Lupus has remissions and flares she has been fighting this like a hero for the past 24 years. Holly is truly a living miracle and her story should be an inspiration to us all.

Since Holly's surgery she has been feeling a bit down. Struggling with the issues Lupus has put on her body and soul. I have had the chance to talk to Ms Holly the past couple of weeks, and I just want her to know how beautiful she is both inside and out. She has made my saddest days brighter and my burdens seem much easier to manage after talking with her. Holly is the kind of friend that shows up at your doorstep bringing treats to sick ones, and the type of friend you can call on day or night. She is a ray of sunshine, and always a good time to be around. Friends like this are priceless! I thought we could all give her a little encouragement...I know when I am feeling down having friends gather round me always lifts my spirits and brings me back to my happy place.

My girls have the best grandpa in the entire world. He is one of those guys that make you feel like you are the most special person on the planet. He is caring, kind, compassionate, and has the biggest heart in the world. We are so lucky to have this incredible man in our lives and we believe he walks on water. A Natural Pick Me Up

I have been needing a pick me up lately with everything going on in our family, so tonight I decided to put my camera around my neck, grab a glass of wine, and head outside. I am ashamed to say I don't spend near enough time in my yard as I use to, it kinda maintains itself at this point. A few years back I planted these gorgeous pink wild rose bushes and the climbing honeysuckle around my gazebo in the backyard. It was so refreshing and invigorating walking up to the gazebo tonight and seeing these in full bloom.

I've been kinda feeling like my lovely goddess statue lately...Minus the lovely and loosing my head a bit!

I sat outside and really reflected on my life and all things important to me. I am so grateful to have a beautiful place among mother nature to go and meditate when times are hard. Cheers to you and all of your beautiful invigorating outdoor spaces. xo, Alys

Surprise Birthday Bedroom Makeover

This past weekend The Hunk and I spent remodelling and redecorating my daughter Aspens bedroom for her birthday. She is going into Junior High School and her bedroom was a bit outdated for her age. She is also having her tonsils taken out this month and we thought this would be a nice surprise for her to relax and veg out in while she is recovering from her surgery. She had no idea I was planning this! She left for the weekend to grandmas house and we got right to work. "If any of you are thinking about doing this I HIGHLY RECOMMEND doing it while the kids are away...We took out 6 bags of treasures/ I mean trash that over her dead body would she have let us remove!"

I love the way this room makeover turned out. I had hinted around asking her if she could have her room any color what color would she want and she said Plum & Green...I was thinking how in the world and I going to pull off Plum & Green, If you have been to my home you know I love neutrals and warm earth tones. I am shocked at how gorgeous this all came together!

This chandelier was a 15.00 flea market find. I painted it black with high gloss paint and added the antique french beaded shades and crystals to give it a very chic look.

You should have seen her face when she walked into her new bedroom! She said, "Mom I can't believe it, I didn't even know my room could look this awesome! Wow, I don't know what I love the most, the chandelier, futon, or the flat screen TV!" I guess all the hard work paid off, she loves it!

The wall decals were something new for me to try out and I love how they really make the walls pop. I purchased them at Ikea, however you can buy them online as well.

Grove and Garden; Signum Pro Vita

A good friend of mine and local artist Gary Killpack will be exhibiting his art work at the Grove and Garden: Signum Pro Vita art gallery located at The Covey Center Art Gallery. It will be open Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and is free. The opening reception is June 5 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.; the public is welcome, black tie affair. It is officially the start of summer, or should I say the "Mom" taxi is officially in business! Around this time every year I find myself with little me time and a whole lot of driving to and from practices, games, parties and summer fun. This year we have waterpark passes, guitar & singing lessons, plans to go on a trip, regular daily errands, and the list never ends. So if you see me out driving the girls from point A to point B wave Hello, I am sure it will be much needed! And remember...as the softball team told me today, Girls Rule Boys Drool! xo Alys

Mothers day comes around once a year and I am always reminded how lucky I am to be a mother. I have the best little girls in the entire world! They are so carrying, giving and loving to one another, and are each others best friends. Growing up I didn't have a sister, however being a mother to these wonderful little girls has let me share in the joy of sisterhood. I love my girls and the blessings they bring each and everyday to my life. Spring Blossoms

Spring is one of my favorite times of year. With all the trees in bloom and the earth coming out of winters hibernation it truly is a gorgeous time here in Utah. Today I drove around my town and took photos of all the beautiful trees in bloom. It was so much fun to see all the different variations in color, texture and scent. Some of the trees smelled so good you could eat them, and others had a horrible rancid odor. I thought it would be fun to share some of the photos I took with you. xo, Alys

Mothers Day Gift Idea

For Mothers Day this year I wanted to make something cheerful and beautiful, yet everlasting and decorative. I also wanted something personable, I love to receive gifts that are a reflection of the person giving them. Some of my favorite things are flowers, tarnished silver and nothing is more timeless to me than a string of vintage pearls. I thought it would be perfect to put these all together to create this little gift from my heart.

I bought these vintage silverplate goblets at the thrift store for .50! What a bargain. You could use anything such as teacups, crystal goblets, bowls, urns, vintage tumblers etc. The important thing is choose something that is a reflection of you, or personalize it for the mother receiving it.

I collect vintage pearl strands and have over 500. I sorted through them all and chose the best pearls for those I will be giving these gift too. You can find vintage strands of pearls at any antique or vintage shop.

The silk flowers I purchased at my local craft store along with florist moss & foam. Using my glue gun I adhered the moss to the foam. Next I cut the stem of the flower to 3 inches and then stuck it down into the foam. This is a super easy project, I finished in under 1/2 hour. Very inexpensive however I think it will be cherished for many years to come.

Tonight I was hanging out with my nephew Anders, we were playing outside when he showed me his "Super Power Ring"

I asked him: Where did you get this?

Anders: I found it in the magic toilet

Me: Oh Really!...Where is the magic toilet?

Anders: It's in my room...you will have to come down to my room to see it

We took off to his bedroom on discovery of "the magic toilet"

Me: So where is this magic toilet?

Anders: points to an empty corner in his room and says "its right there...you have to get inside, flush, and then you go down to magic land were everything you find is magic! You may even find a magic ring like mine! Now Aunt Alys lets go!!!

Me: What kinda of magic powers does your ring have?

Anders: If you put it on your finger no monsters will get you and you can have anything you want!

I'M THINKING WE ALL NEED A MAGIC RING! Anything you want, WOW...I'll start my list

I have had many request from all of my favorite peeps wanting to see photos of our home. Since it is an always changing array of antiques and vintage I have never really compiled a photo album to display it. I love lighting, paying attention to fine details and beautiful antiques are all very important to me. Decorating is one of my passions and I do it both for our home and local clients. Living among the things I love is such a blessing, It inspires creativity in all forums of my existence. According to my family, I have always had an eye for the finer things in life. I try my best to mix in both high end antiques with flea market finds whenever possible. I was a single mother for a few years and decorating my home on a budget became very important to me. You will see a trend of French antiques throughout these photos of my home. I adore old dress forms, chandeliers, old portrait paintings, fabulous architectural fragments and mirrors. You will see this trend through out our home. I am planning on posting a couple different post of rooms for you to see over the next couple of weeks. I was paying a visit today to one of my favorite blogs in blogland Heather Bullard and was instantly inspired. Don't you just love it when you fall in love at first site! Well this is how I feel when I stop into Heathers Blog. She always has the best photos full of ideas and inspiration for our homes along with great recipes for all you cooks out there. "We all know that counts me out, unless driving to the dairy queen is included in the recipe" Anyhow she just did a post on pretty cabinets and like I said, I was instantly inspired. My dining room table has been crying out for a new display and this antique cabinet has been gather dust for years in our basement so I thought it would be great to bring it upstairs and throw a little something together. So I have to admit, my daughters are definitely my peeps! Last night I walked into the kitchen and Aspen was busily making these peace necklaces for her friends at school. She said:

"Mom, I wore this necklace I made last night to school today and EVERYBODY loved it. They were all asking where I bought it, how much it cost and everything! When I told them I made it I had 6 girls ask me if I could make them one as well. So I am going to make these necklaces and give them to all my friends tomorrow at school"

She came up with the necklace idea all on her own, and had it created within minutes.

Next she said "I also made me these earrings, I think if I wear them tomorrow I will get orders just like I did on the necklaces, but this time I'm going to charge 5 bucks for a pair!"

I turned around, smiled and thought...That's my girl! A little entrepreneur at heart! I can still remember walking around the neighborhood when I was her age selling my hand painted prayer rocks. I am sure all of the rocks that I sold are the reason for my success today. Yes, thank you kind neighbors for making my day! It wasn't about the rocks as much as me finding self worth and truly believing I could be something someday! xo, Alys

My Perfect Vacation~Come Along With Me

Come along with me as I take you on a trip...I have been wanting to travel so bad lately however due to scheduling conflicts with "The Hunk" we have been unable to leave town. So I decided it would be fun to go with you all on a make believe trip for a day or so. "Acting like my not so grown up self, see previous post." Anyhow I have made plans for us to stay at this marvelous & majestic castle. I shall have the room in the top left turret, which room would you like?

You will find me here in the early morning sunrise, soaking in my bath of bubbles listening to the sounds of the earth waking up. Now you should know I am not a morning person so my bubble bath will be just the thing I need to get my body moving. I have been told that it is not a good idea to talk to me before my morning bath, apparantly I can be quite the grump.

This morning for breakfast I thought it would be delightful to share with you freshly baked flaky croissants and fresh cut berries. Looking over the river to the Eiffel tower we shall plan our day? There is much in store for us to see and do so be sure to get your fill this morning, we will not have time to break much until dinner time...Yum!

First on the agenda we will be going shopping..YES SHOPPING! What girl doesn't like a good shopping trip and in Paris "Oh My" I have dreamt of what the Paris Flea Markets must be like and these two photos are very much like my dreams. Wait, wait...is that a chandelier I see?!

Next we shall travel the world exploring all the interesting architectural delights our eyes can see. I adore old world architecture and this interesting castle really sparked my intrigue.

After taking in the craftsmanship of architects both old and new I am feeling a bit exhausted...I think this is a good time to lie down here and rest. I have gathered a few good books for us to read and fresh light fruit to snack on as we are drifting of into slumber land for our afternoon nap.

Well I hope you are feeling rested as we are in for a treat! Yes a treat I tell ya! I have hired this dashing gondolier to give us a ride through the waters of Venice in his gondola prepared especially for us. The history of this great land will be spoken to us in Italian accent as only someone with a great love and passion for his country could.

I know, I know....I didn't want to leave the gondola either but it is time to take in some art history. The place for this today will be the Smithsonian. All of the displays both old and new inspire my creative side and fulfill my need for knowledge. I'm still not sure what that creepy looking wood spider was hanging from the ceiling! Did you see that?

They have called ahead and reserved this entire restaurant for all of us. I am so excited to taste the food and mingle with all of you. I am famished after our day spent traveling and seeing all of the sites, art & architecture of our day.

One of my favorite things to do is lie by the ocean as the sun is going down. The smells and waves crashing on the beach are music to my ears. There is nothing better than the salty clean smell of ocean air. Would you like to join me in my hammock, and sing a song as the earth settles on its shadow?

Tonight I am feeling a bit adventurous. I am ready to hit the town and explore the nightlife of this incredible city. I have never dressed up in such steam punk attire however I think this will be my outfit for the night...What do you plan on wearing, something pompadour perhaps?! Where shall we go?

Grow Up...I Think Not!

So apparently it is time for me to grow up! My girls have both told me in not so round about ways this past week that I don't act my age. Pretty much insinuating that it is time for me to grow up. I don't think I like this idea very much, what fun is growing up! So instead of growing up I will pretend. I have gone out and bought myself several bottles of Grown Up Soda. It is 2 Die 4 and they know it. I'm planning on drinking it whenever they are around, acting like my not so grown up self and not sharing! Sorry girls, Grow up...I think not! Love Mom

Over The Rainbow

This past weekend we celebrated St Patricks Day at the "Over the Rainbow Party" at the cabin. As you all may know I love to play dress up, and this occasion was no different. It was so much fun dolling ourselves up for the night and seeing what other funny costumes our family had came up with. Robert, Aysha & I chose to go as Sporty Leprechaun's.

As luck would have it at the end of our rainbow was the best food ever! A feast surely made for one lucky leprechaun!

Some fun Green foods ideas to add into your Irish Feast this year are Green Mashed Potatoes, Chips & Guacamole, Margaritas, Green Sliced Apples, Green Spinach Dip, Celery, Big Leafy Green Salad, and my favorite Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. You really can get creative and fun with this green idea, with a small bottle of green food coloring and a wild imagination your family will have a ball.

Every year in February I get a case of the winter blues, this year has been no different. I am a girl that LOVES the sun, and getting away from the long chilly winter here in Utah is a must for me. We have been trying to plan a vacation to the sun, but are stumped this year on where to go? We normally go to Hawaii, Florida or California. But this year we want to try out somewhere new. We have never been outside of the United States so that is an option as well. Any suggestions for a girl searching for her rays?!

I have to share a funny love story with you. I was age 12 in 7th grade and I had a boyfriend, we were officially "going out". Meaning he was my boyfriend and I was his girlfriend period! Nothing else, no holding hands, kissing etc... At least this was what I thought until Valentines day came rolling around. It was customary for girls my age to send notes to their boyfriends either in class or drop them in the slot of their locker. Well to my surprise my boyfriend left me a V-day love note. It was so sweet and I was so excited to get it until I read S.W.A.K at the bottom. The naive me had no idea what this meant, however my boyfriend was kind enough to literally spell it out for me S.W.A.K= SOMEONE WANTS A KISS... and he was even so sweet to follow it up with NOW! Well this sent an instant shock of terror through my body, I remember thinking Kiss?! GROSS! I found all my best girls and told them to go break up with this sicko kisser freak right away! I will always remember how nervous and scared I was thinking I was going to have to kiss a boy! Yucky...Yes, I have came along way since those good ole days of 7th grade and I have to admit, I like to kiss boys now! S.W.A.K

Your Mama Don't Dance & Your Daddy Don't Rock n Roll

If any of my bloggers friends out there are wondering why I have a been a bit MIA lately I have a confession! I am addicted to Rockband...Shhh, secretly I do believe I am a rock star in my own little living room! I love it! I play the drums, I sing and I play the guitar...OK no, I haven't totally fallen off the deep end, colored my hair pink, and pierced my nose "Secretly I would like to" we just dressed up for our family rock out session tonight. It was so much fun!

Introducing our family band "KantDanz" Aspen was on the mike, Aysha the drums, and Robert & I on the guitars. If you haven't played you must! It doesn't matter what age you are you will get a kick out of this game. And our family is up to a rockband challenge anytime...Bring it on! :)

Anders came a bit late but wanted to dress up as well. Isn't he adorable!?

Help! My pinkie finger can't reach the orange key!!! Are any of you rockbanders out there experiencing this same problem? As hard I as try I just can't seem to get the brain and fingers to work together when it comes to the orange key.

Make Your List

I have been thinking a lot about my future recently and the things I would like to accomplish before this life as I know it is over. You may think that is a strange thought to have at the age of 33, however if you know me, you know I don't like to let a single moment pass me by without enjoying it and living it to the fullest. I just finished a book titled "THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU TURN 30" OK so I am 3 years late getting started on this book, but better late than never! The book consists of several famous, successful, and proud achievers speaking about their accomplishments and successful stories. One of the activities in the book was about taking stock of your past and present and setting a "to do" list for your future. I am always making plans and setting goals for myself, however I rarely look back at what I have accomplished and how far I have come. This was such a fun activity that I thought I would share it all with you. Have fun making your "to do" list and even more fun looking back over the years at all the great and fabulous things you have accomplished~! Mannequins...My Love

My love for antique & vintage dress forms dates back to a very early childhood memory. When I was a little girl I spent a great deal of time with my grandma. She worked in a sewing factory that was not far from her home. I remember the crowd of ladies talking about and all of the machines working so hard. I recall the chatter and busyness of this shop and how interesting I found my grandmothers place of work. I was sure, one day I would grow up and be just like her! I am positive she would tell you it was not interesting, and not so much fun, AT ALL...but to me with my bright eyes and eagerness to be just like her I thought this was the most perfect and facinating place to work in all of the world! My Grandma has always been my hero as I have said before...through her example my love for art, crafts, hard work, and sewing began.
My earliest memory in discovering my talents and hobbies were at the hands of my grandmother and her sewing machine. An old Singer machine that seemed to be very advanced and technical at the time, however now could use a major overload. She always had old scraps of fabric and spools of threads lying around that I could envision as dolls, pillows, or wall hangings. At the age of 8 she let me pull a couple pieces of fabric together and make the most beautiful pillow one has ever seen..."NOT",I am sure! But I was proud of it none the less and really felt accomplished and happy that I made this pillow. She was always confident & trustworthy of me and let me go at it with my novice skills. I was very proud and showed everyone, I really thought I was onto something Big, HUGE...I Planned on making these pillows and selling them globally by age 9! I went around to the local neighbors homes and peddled my pillows for a little extra money..."I guess I have always been an entrepreneur at heart, Who knew!" I saved this money earned from the neighbors pity and grace to go with my grandma to the local super market. Here I would buy myself a water weenie, some laffy taffy or something just as cool as it!

OK, Anyways...now that I have gotten lost on that tangent, I just have to say, Mannequins...My Love! I love them, I have them all over my home. You may come to my home and think it is a bit odd, and perhaps it is, but that is OK by me! I love them and have them almost in every room. From a display on my entertainment center with 6 dress forms to a simple yet understated dress form in my entry room. They speak to me of a time gone by, hard work, and imagination beyond what my eyes can see...

Taken For Granted

Living in Utah my entire life I have come to realize that I take our beautiful mountain range for granted. It wasn't until I was driving the other day with a stranger from out of town having this very conversation that I realized this. He was going on and on about how beautiful and majestic our mountain range truly is. It really brought to light for me the awe and breathtaking grace these large mountains truly do possess. I think it is kinda like living by the ocean, you don't really visit it much, because it is always there.

This past weekend I took my daughter and her friend sleigh riding. While we were enjoying "The Greatest Snow on Earth" I stopped to take in this beautiful mountain scene. If you live in an area that is not surrounded by a mountain range such as this I hope you will visit Utah sometime. They truly are a site to behold.

For Christmas this year my daughter Aspen saved her money to buy me the most wonderful Christmas present I have ever received, and I am 33! She knows of my love for antiques and all things French, and she saved her hard earned money to buy me this special doll for my Christmas gift. I just love it to pieces, and had to share this present with all of you. I would feel selfish keeping her all to myself. She has sultry black cat eyes and pressed red pouty lips that just tug on my heart strings. From her extravagant silk floral shawl and delicate black net lace dress to her original eyeglass necklace this doll was made from me! I love that she is a bit tattered and worn as that is how I feel some days. Don't you just adore the gorgeous silk ribbon rose holding her up do?! I hope all of your holiday memories this year have been as sweet and enduring as mine have.

I guess it just goes to show you it truly is OK to have childlike wonder and believe!

The past week I was able to be a room mother at my daughter Aysha's third grade class. We had so much fun making and decorating gingerbread houses. The kids all did such a great job and this was such a fun activity for them. Surprisingly easy enough for the kids to do all on there own, and the clean up wasn't to bad. If you are looking for a fun holilday craft for your little ones this year this is a great idea. The base of the gingerbread house is just a milk carton covered with brown paper and securely glued to the cardboard base. This can be prepared prior to the kids starting the craft. We bought tons of candy and just let the kids have fun imagining and decorating their houses. The frosting you will need to prepare 10 minutes prior.
The gingerbread house frosting recipe:
1 bag powdered sugar
3 egg whites
1 tsp cream of tarter
Mix all of this together in your mix master and then place it in a decorating bag. Its that easy! Have fun and enjoy your holiday gingerbread house.

"Snow" Much Fun

This past weekend "The Hunk" and I took our annual trip to spend the day in Park City. Park City is a little ski resort town nestled deep in the mountains of Utah. It is such a quaint little town full of lots of fun things to do. From small unique boutique shops on historical main street, to the worlds best skiing this is the place you want to be in the winter months. We love spending time walking down main street, browsing the shops, people watching and just hanging out among all the tourists. Park City also hosts the Sundance Film Festival in January. If you ever get a chance to come to Utah during the winter you want to be sure to visit Park City. The food is incredible, from fine dining to beer & nuts on the deck of a historical building looking over main street, you will just love it.

The Hunk and I got a bit carried away and had a huge snow fight...as you can see from the pictures below he won, I was totally tackled..."Which doesn't sit very well with me, as I like to win"... I feel another snow fight coming on soon!

Saying Goodbye to John Deere Green...But Hellooo Chocolate

The past two weekends have been spent giving my front room a new French Parisian make-over. It was time to say goodbye to John Deere Green and Hellooo to Chocolate! About a year ago I painted my front room this lovely green color and while I thought it was hip at the time, I was so wrong. After living with it for what seems like an eternity I spotted this yummy chocolate brown color and knew, a change was on the horizon! The hunk was a trooper and totally was game for helping me re-paint and re-decorate the entire room. "Truth be known he wasn't digging John Deere Green either!"

Before repainting we thought it would be fun to use the blank wall as a giant canvas to play around and have fun with! My favorite was this I Heart You that I painted...you can tell "The Hunk" is just thrilled to have his picture taken in front of it!

I have been gathering pieces for this makeover for the past few months, and am thrilled with the end result. What a great excuse as well to get new furniture! I am in love with the antique re-upholstered French sofa & over sized reading chair. Here you will see before and after shots of the makeover.

I love collecting crowns & things and this old French hutch is the perfect display piece for these small collectibles.

This is my favorite boudoir doll from my collection. I enjoy collecting these as well. Even though the French Boudior Dolls are not high end collectibles something about them speaks to me. Their sassy looks, rich clothing, moody eyes and pouty lips I just adore. She even still has her pearl necklace and bloomers on! I purchased this doll from another online boutique "French Garden House" several years ago.

Dress forms and mannequins are one of my very favorite things to decorate with. In fact if you come to my home you may find it a bit strange, I seem to have them in every room.

I love French Object De' Art pieces, from old French doorknockers to beautiful bookends they always bring delight to my eyes.

My passion in decor is lighting and my favorite chandeliers of all time are the original early 1900 Italian Beaded Chandeliers. In this room I have used an large beaded chandy and a 5 light beaded wall sconces as well. I have also lit the room with corner accent chandeliers, lamps and candlelight.

I love the unique and appealing qualities of this gorgeous old dress form. Using it in such an unconventional way adds to the art and appeal of the rooms decor.

I hope you have enjoyed this little room makeover as much as I have. I plan on spending many hours using it or just walking by to admire the beauty of it all.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. During this time of the year I often reflect on all of the things I am thankful for. Getting together with family and friends, enjoying the day talking and reflecting over the years is one of my favorite pastimes.

It goes without saying the food is always delicious! One of my favorite dishes at Thanksgiving time is Pomegranate Salad. I will post the recipe for it here tomorrow. Pomegranates are in season during this time of year. This salad is super easy to whip up and compliments the turkey and dressings so well.

Happy Birthday to you...Last night was Ayshas 9 year old birthday party. We had so much fun getting dressed up as pirate princesses and turning our home into a pirate ship. I can't believe my baby just turned 9! It seems like only yesterday that she was just a tiny baby in my arms. She is growing up so fast and is such a fun little girl. With the most sweetest personality and funny as a clown, I am so lucky to be her mom! Aysha loves all of her friends and is quite the entertainer. We made up these invitations below for her to send out to all of her shipmates to come and join in on the fun!

This is a very inexpensive way to make and send out invitations. I had them printed up at Costco for 2.35 if you can believe it! Everyone loved how much fun they were!

One of Aysha's favorite people is Anders her cousin. She takes such good care of him and loves him so much!

These pirate cupcakes were the hit of the party. If you are ever in need of specialties cakes or cupcakes Dippidees is the place to go. Not only do these cupcakes look so adorable they were absolutely divine & delicious as well!

French Framed Collage Heirloom

I have started making my Christmas presents for loved ones a bit late this year. Normally I start thinking about this around the first of September but with so much going on with the kids and family activities I have been a bit late. I thought it would be fun to share with you this French Framed Collage Heirloom that I have put together. It has been so much fun making it. If you are anything like me you have bits and pieces of gathered treasures lying all around your home. Putting them together in a curio or frame as I have done gives them a special feel and really showcases them in a fun way to display.

I made both a framed collage as well as a shadow box curio. Using things that have special meaning to me really personalizes this gift, and will make it special for the person receiving it.

I chose to go with a gold, silver, cream, brown and black color scheme. Choosing your colors and sticking within that palatte really makes this pop!

From old star fish found in Hawaii, to gorgeous Italian carved wood frames, I just gathered together all of the things I love. I have been gathering pieces for this for the past 6 months. If you are planning on making one just keep that in mind while you are out shopping flea markets or antique shops. You can collect things that are special to you. I plan to continue adding pieces to my collage as special things come into my life.

Old religious relics are always fun to use on a project like this. I love the patina and aged feel they add. Anything that has special meaning to you can be used. I love crowns, so adding the crown drawer pull added to the dimension and also helped to personalize this.

I found this old carved wood gilt frame at a thrift store for 10.00. It makes the perfect frame for this beautiful collage. I cut out a wood board and covered it with a batting and fabric. Going with a neutral color on your fabric is important so your piece doesn't get to busy. You could even use an old flower sack or burlap. This is a very inexpensive project, but the end result is priceless!

I gathered several of my very favorite photos from the past. This is such a fun way to pull those pictures out of old memory books and put them to good use.

A Tribute-My Grandma

Do you have someone in your life that can make all of your worries, all of your cares go away with just one hug? That is my Grandma. She has always been my foundation and I have always looked up to her. She has amazing strength, incredible creativity, and a heart as big as this world. Her love has always been unconditional for me and I have always felt like a star in her eyes. She has a way of making me believe I can be anything I want to be. She has always given me a reason and a purpose to want to be a better person. Her beauty shines through even in her elder years. Grandma, I love you!
This is my Grandma in her 20s. She was and still is so beautiful both inside and out. She just recently on Sunday celebrated her 80th birthday. She had 36 people there from our family.
My grandma has always had such a strong spirit. In her youth she loved to ride horses, and spend time with all of her brothers, sisters and cousins. She has always been such a hard worker. She is never sitting still. If it isn't a child she is chasing after you can find her creating something beautiful for her home or taking care of a neighbor.

Their love and passion for one another lives on. They were always so flirty with one another, and we could always see how much love they shared.

The Scary Blue Box!

Today I went out to get the mail, and it was here!!! I have been anxiously awaiting this new software from Adobe. It is the new Photoshop PS4 that was just launched last week. I was super excited to open it and load it to my computer...This feeling changed QuIcKLy when I realized this doesn't come with a users manual. Nothing, no directions, not even a flash card for dummies! Just a pretty, bright and cheerful blue box and a disk. Talk about feeling a bit intimidated. Have you ever bought a new electronic and felt like your children knew more about it than you did?

I am sure this little intimidating blue box will soon come in very useful. I will have the basics down in no time and will be able to start creating incredible photos and layouts with it. Is there anyone else that is a bit intimidated by this new software? Any leads on good instructional videos or sites with direction or forums would be appreciated!

With Halloween approaching we have prepared our costumes for all the upcoming parties and events we have this weekend. Our home is decked out in ghosts and goblins galore and we are ready for the ghoulish night. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. As you know I love to dress up and any excuse to play dress up I am down for. I also love to decorate and pulling out the Halloween decorations is so much fun every year. It is customary for the kids to go Trick or Treating and we normally have a huge Halloween Party at our house. We will be sure to take lots of pictures of the kids and their costumes.
The grim keepers skull with candy worms crawling out of its sockets...a little ghoulish but so much fun for the kids!
I love vintage Halloween, and I normally buy a new piece for my collection every year. Do you remember the old paper witch hats from our childhood? I am using my hats this year as lamp shades for my sideboard lamps.

By the end of the night, some of them were barely alive. Forty prison guards, wielding clubs and their warden's blessing, went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of “obstructing sidewalk traffic.”
When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press. Woodrow Wilson and his associates tried to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. It is inspiring to know the doctor refused. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men. They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head, and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. We have it so good and are so blessed, with our beautiful families, friends and loved ones around us. To live in this wonderful country, with our freedom to choose, liberty and justice. I am supposed to share six quirky or random things about me that you may or may not know.

I love the color Purple. I always have and always will. I love every shade of purple from deep royal purple to pale lavendar. When I was 15 my mom painted my room purple for me as a surprise present. I love, love, loved it! I Love to Dress Up! You will rarely find me in jeans and a t-shirt. I have always loved style and clothes are one of my passions. I also love a sale. I rarely buy anything full price and get so excited over a bargain. High fashion to me is art. I love to see how different people dress and put together their clothes to make a statement.

I also love photography, portraiture mostly. I am currently studying at The International School of Photography. I never thought I would go back to school, but I am loving it. Now that my kids are all in school full-time I wanted to pursue my love for photography. I just recently launched my photography website that I am super excited about. It is more of a hobby than anything but I am having so much fun doing it.

I am having a secret affair with Jimmy..."Shhhh" Yes, Jimmy Choo is my secret obsession. I just got this fabulous snake skin handbag today and am head over heels for it! There is nothing better than a fabulous handbag or pair of shoes and Jimmy knows just how to speak to my heart...Pitter Patter...
I love lemons. Yes, I admit it, I am a lemon addict. Juicy lemons anytime of the day with salt is my idea of the best treat ever. I love them with salt and I eat the entire thing except for the rind. Mmmmm!
I love my job! When I was young I always told my family that I was going to grow up and become a professional shopper. I was darn good at it then and always fantasized about turning it into a career. Well that is pretty much what I do in a nutshell. Shopping for fine antiques and home decor is my job, my passion and I love it! Running my two websites and meeting people from all around the world that share in the same passion for antiques as I do is so rewarding. Finding my passion and being able to do it daily is one of the greatest blessings in my life.

The Hunk ~Happy Anniversary

Two years ago today on the most beautiful beach in all of the world, I was married to The Hunk! He is my saving grace, my rock, my best friend, and my love. He is also the best dad, a great golfer, compassionate, caring and kind. His character and integrity teach me life lessons daily and his friendship and random acts of sillyness always have me laughing in stiches. I am so lucky to be married to such an amazing man. I love you sweets, Happy Anniversary!

A few weeks ago he let me take the above photo of him for my new photography website. I can't stop drooling over how gorgeous he is..."blush"! I fall in love with him all over again every time I see him. I truly think I am one lucky girl to have met such an incredible man...and to think, Four years ago I was just strolling through the aisles at Target when we met. "In my sweats with my hair pulled up in a pony tail on top of my head" I wasn't looking so hot shall we say! I was shopping, looking for a particular CD, when he asked me what I was looking for. We had a brief conversation to establish that we were both single and then he asked for my phone number. I was so twitterpated after giving him my number that I ditched my shopping cart and everything in it and bee-lined it for my car. Sure enough he called first thing the next morning and the rest is history, We have been happily together ever since.

Who ever said white men can't jump! Believe it or not this photo was taken on our wedding day with no photoshop trick photography added! This has always been one of my favorite pics of him.

Taken on Poolenalena Beach in Maui right after our ceremony. We were married on the private beach of Sharon Stone and Clint Eastwood. It was the most breathtaking romantic place in the world. I had dreamt my entire life of getting married on the beach in Hawaii. It was so surreal and incredible actually being able to live out my perfect dream.

Annual Murder Mystery at Geertsen Manor

This past weekend we had our annual Murder Mystery at the Cabin. I can't remember if I have ever laughed so hard and so much in all my life. If you havn't ever done one of these murder mysteries you must! They are such a great excuse to get all dolled up and act like kids all over again. We normally purchase our mystery dinners here. They are super easy to print out and the directions are quite self explanatory. We always make a weekend out of it, however if you only have one night that is ok too. Be sure to send out the invitations a week or so in advance so your guest can plan their costumes and role play for the evening.

This is great so your guest can mingle and enjoy one another while the finishing touches are being placed on the dinner. Half of the fun is preparing for the evening. From creating your costume, to decorating, just have a ball! Mood lighting and recreating the scene from the play are all important for setting the stage for the night...but most important have fun! xo, Alys

Do Dreams Really Come True?!...

The past few nights I have found myself feeling a bit more like a popper than a princess...I have been tossing and turning and those few moments when I have been able to fall asleep I have found myself searching my dreams for direction. Have you ever felt this way?

I love to rest, don't get me wrong but for the past few days I have felt so disconnected with my future and plans that I am constantly thinking about what to do... I feel there are many opportunities on the horizon, and choosing which direction to focus has become quite cumbersome. I may take a few days off to reconnect with me, really listen to myself and my surroundings and chart a plan...wish me luck!
